As a matter of fact, there are not any characters in the story that have enough exposition, the background of the community and their ritual is unknown. Shirley Jackson does not only implement an obvious plot of the annual lethal lottery in the story, but the author also incorporates several themes that are related to the life inside a community of people, especially, in a closed and small community like the fictional one in the story.First of all, Mr. Summers is introduced while he prepares for the annual lottery and he makes the pieces of paper with the marks on them for the lottery.
